How to Protect your Home against Fungus and Termites that can happen from all the Rain and Flooding!
By Glenn Workman, PESTOUT Owner and Veteran
In our previous blog, How to Protect your Home against Fungus and Termites that can happen from all the Rain and Flooding! Part One, we talked about the moisture caused by rain and flooding. At Pestout, we feel it’s important for both homeowners and business owners to prepare and protect their property. Moisture that gets into the wood and under your home or building creates fungus and attracts termites.
So what can you do?
The obvious answer to this question is to keep your home as dry as possible. Of course, when a storm strikes, there’s no easy way to do this. However, we do have some tips for what you can do to keep your house dry. We can also help you figure out what to do if moisture still gets in and how often you should have it inspected.
- For starters, you should clean out down spouts and gutters on a regular basis. This will prevent excess flooding. It will also keep fungus and termites away.
- You should make sure your kitchen and bathroom appliances are fully sealed and leak-free. Always keep an eye out for damaged pipes, and fix them right away.
- After storms, inspect any problem areas for signs of water damage or leakage. Taking these precautions and keeping your home up to code will limit damage during a hurricane.
- Consider purchasing a restoration moisture meter. This meter will help you identify areas of your house that are letting water in. That way, you can fix them before the hurricane causes further damage.
What if my home experiences water damage?
After a storm, your moisture meter can help you calculate the water damage to your home. You should definitely still photograph and record all the damage you notice. But installing a water meter prior to a storm is an extra precaution. In fact, it can help you get the most money back from your insurance.
After documenting the damages, you may be eager to get a head start on repairs. You should proceed cautiously. Before making any repairs, you should hire restoration experts to inspect your home. They can identify any excess moisture that’s still lurking after the storm. Before rebuilding or painting anything, it’s important to eliminate this moisture. Otherwise, you’ll find fungus and termites invading your home before long.
