How to Protect your Home against Fungus and Termites that can happen from all the Rain and Flooding!
By Glenn Workman, PESTOUT Owner and Veteran
Now that it’s the fall and winter is coming, we need to remember two important things about our coastal area. First, it’s still officially hurricane season until November 30th, and second, we get hit by more Nor-easters in the the winter than we do hurricanes in the summer. Let’ face it. Our area floods even from a normal thunderstorm!
If you’re a homeowner or business owner, you need to be prepare now.
Flooding rain and storm surge can cause a great deal of damage, especially in low-lying coastal regions like ours. As a hurricane or Nor-easter moves toward the coast, it causes sea levels to rise. This rising water is called storm surge, and it can flood coastal towns. Storm surge can also destroy houses, docks and beaches, making it extremely dangerous.
Storm surge and rain can devastate communities like Hampton Roads.
How? Most of Hampton Roads is at or below sea level, so the water has nowhere to go. Do you own a home in Hampton Roads? If so, you should know that these storms can be far more damaging than you might expect. Torrential winds and floods don’t just damage your property’s infrastructure. They can also cause long term damage. That’s because the moisture that comes from the rain and surge can create fungus in your wood and attract termites to your home.
How does moisture create fungus?
When we think of damage, we often think of collapsed trees and buildings. Sometimes, however, the damage is above and underground. In Hampton Roads, most of our area is below sea level. That means that if any part of your house floods, there isn’t anywhere for all that moisture to go. Unfortunately, a wet and unventilated space is the perfect breeding ground for fungus.
Fungus needs moisture above everything else in order to survive. If there a moist surface in your house, fungus is likely to find it and spread. We can do our best to keep our homes clean and dry throughout the year to prevent fungus growth. But when a storm hits, there is moisture everywhere, and it can be hard to get rid of it.
Why does moisture attract termites?
Just like fungus, termites are extremely drawn to moisture. Termites are notorious for their wood-eating habits. However, they actually depend on moist wood for sustenance. Termites are particularly attracted to crawlspaces, where it’s dark and moisture builds up over time. They also love mulch, because mulch keeps water trapped underground.
Termites can only live for a few days without sufficient water. So when a storm makes its way along the coast or your yard floods from a storm, termites can thrive. After that, termites can locate ample spots to hide and feed.
