Identifying features of termites vs flying ants:
- Wings are equal in size
- Straight antennae
- Thicker waist

Winged carpenter ants can often be confused for termites. Reproducing carpenter ants have wings so they can fly away from the nest and breed. Flying ants have the following differences in features to termites:
- Large wings and a second pair of small wings
- Slender waists
- Bent antennae
Carpenter ants do not eat wood like termites, but they do hollow out wood for their extensive nests and can still damage your property. If you see winged ants swarm, you could have an infestation.
If you suspect you have a carpenter ant problem, give us a call at (757) 814-2923 and we’ll come out for a free inspection.
Why am I seeing winged termites or ants?
Most termites and ants do not have wings. Winged termites or ants are called swarmers and their purpose is to find a place to start a new colony and reproduce. When you see swarmers, it is often an indication of an infestation.
